Address : Khandal Galli, Sambhaji Nagar, Ausa, Maharashtra 413520
Location : https://goo.gl/maps/Vw6HjeanqMdiQfox6
The US fort in the Latur district is one of those forts that has a hazy history of its own. The prominence of Ausa Fort came to light during the fighting between the Deccan Sultanates after the Bahamani Era. The Fort had received 13 different names, but the name of Ausa was the last with which it is now known. The fort is located on a depressed ground level, with the highest point of the fort looking over the surrounding higher ground level.
The layout appears to have been useful in keeping watch on incoming armies from a greater distance and keeping most of the fort concealed.
The Fort is designed in an almost square shape with a double wall mounted with Turkish engineered cannons on semicircular bases, and the entire fort is in the center with ditches almost 120 feet wide surrounding it. The Fort has undergone numerous modifications from its original form, thus inadvertently becoming a design collaboration of Hindu and Muslim architecture during the years of its occupation.
Among the surviving inscriptions which are mostly in an illegible state, one of the Nilgiri inscriptions dates from the year 1529. Ausa Fort has an irregular history that needs to be uncovered.

It is famous for the historical Battle of Udgir of 1760, in which the Marathas, led by Sadashivrao Bhau, defeated the Nizams, and after which the Treaty of Udgir was signed. The fort is named after the Hindu saint Udaygiri Rishi.
Scattered across the surrounding hills are a number of former military observation points and rest houses, built from an unusual white clay. However, they have all long since fallen into disrepair. Udgir fort may also feature a deep tunnel connecting it with Bhalki and Bidar forts.
The fort is bounded by a 40 ft (12 m) deep trench and contains several palaces, as well as Udaygir Maharaj’s Samadhi, which stands 60 ft (18 m) below normal ground level. It has some rare inscriptions written in Arabic and Persian attesting to the promotion of knowledge and culture by local Muslim rulers over the centuries.
The fort served as a military base for the Marathas to keep up the pressure on Nijam. The fort was under the control of Marathas until 1818 and later, the British moved it towards Nizam.
